Because there are more hydroxide ions than hydrogen ions in the solution, the pH should be higher than 7, indicating that the solution is essential.

If the ph of the soil is very acidic (below 5.5), then lime should be used. Somewhat acidic soil is ideal for most fruits, vegetables, and a wide variety of plants.
